Interesting, you are quite right that gender roles are rigidly sterotyped in this time period [Victorian] Women are confied to homes and are legally controlled by men. Of course gender diverity existed but expressing it was illegal. One famous playwright, Oscar Wilde, spent many years in prison, his career and reputation ruined.
